The sky this morning was not a washy blue, but something deep and strong. The rain came; the rain went. And this evening it was a pleasure to put the bin out, so that I could admire the blue behind the tall trees. The evening was coolish and damp; very pretty.

Peter Ebdon bored Ronnie O'Sullivan out of the world championship this evening.

In other news, I cleaned my room this afternoon: emptied the room; swept and mopped the floors; wiped all the surfaces. It took me quite a while. And then I brought out my radio gear, which I hope soon to improve with a proper antenna system.

There was other stuff, but I don't remember it. Good night. :)

I just heard a VE1 station answering an OJ0 (Market Reef) station's CW CQ call on 10.105 MHz. There's a badly strung-out 20m-long dipole doing the receiving here. (If I make a logging program, I must build some SWL notion into it.)

I watched Super Size Me just now, in which the director eats nothing but McDonald's for a month. It was pretty good.

I heard a net on 5328 this evening, at some time between 8 and 9, I would guess. 29D and 58 were well audible, with 97A readable too.

Again, perhaps there was something else, but I don't remember...

... and, just now, LA3XI CW on 1.833 MHz. A DF (Germany, not direction finding) station was nearby too.

I think I just heard E87 calling a radio check on 5343. The other stations disappeared some time ago. I think they were 51A, 72C and 72B. 72C was quite strong, calling on a full-wave loop cut for the mailbox frequency, whatever that is these days. The loop was down by the river, he said, where the ground was saturated.

For my part, I'm considering constructing a balanced L-match ASTU.

Between 2 and 4 this morning, there were great lights and noises of thunder and lightning. I went for a slash, then viewed a few flashes from the centre bedroom. The sky was still with moisture, and coloured with the street lighting. Closer flashes and noises occurred after I had returned to bed. And rain became audible. The flashes moved away, but still disturbed me with light, even when their sounds ceased to reach me.

I suppose the higher frequencies are generally quiet because of the stage of the sunspot cycle; however, today the lower frequencies are quiet too. Shannon Volnet was very quiet earlier; better now. And there's not a lot of QRM at the moment.

Talking of the sunspot cycle there, I had a sense of déja-vu; I've probably typed something similar before. :)

Oh, it's VolMet! (I just looked it up on Google.)

The quietness reminds me of that blackout, or Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance, or whatever it was, when I was near the tennis courts in my final year at school, trying (hopelessly) to make a terminated dipole. A 27 foot mast was up, with the elements sloping to ground. I suppose I had been able to establish communication with 52, but I don't know how much we managed after that. I remember his signal being quite readable, but very quiet, against a background of complete silence.

And that, in turn, reminds me of another outside broadcast I made at some earlier time, not far away. I remember being sat on a bench on the grass in front of the pavilion, the 320 by my side and a length of D-10 tied to the railings of the balcony. Two Orchard lads sat with me; Muckle and Barnes or Black? I don't even recall which of those were still at school during my radio stage, but they were certainly older than me. On some high frequency band, I contacted a man in Azerbaijan, a country I was unaware of at the time.

And that reminds me of the early call I had to attend in the fifth form, for having been late for bed. Phil Will and Zod were responsible for the management of the early call, from which they released me, after a short while. Perhaps Noddy was on duty that night, with SAS floating around to dish out the punishment. Or something. In any case, the incriminating radio contact with 52 remains recorded.

I switched the radio on and suddenly wondered what/which the mailbox frequency might be. I tried a few, and found some ARQ on 4953. One station was dominant; I suppose that would be BMBX. And after the ARQ, just now, came another mode of whose nature I am unsure. I believe it is a mode I have heard on the amateur bands.

It's nearly half past seven, and already the lower NRN frequencies have assumed their night time characteristics. Here is 2128; that constant quiet turbine sound is audible. This is probably normal behaviour, but I'd like to know for sure. It seems odd that the frequencies sound as they did ten years ago. 2273 has some scrambled voice. 2413 is quiet. 2768 is noisy. I'll listen to 5328 for a while. There are plenty of crackles; the weather is stormy, but not here. Why the 2 kHz offset, I wonder.

The bank holiday is behind us, and the NRN frequencies are full of static. But then I did leave the pre-amp on when I went to bed last night; it doesn't sound so bad without that. The 40m band sounds good; conditions are better than they were yesterday. Shannon VolMet on 5505 sounds good; no pre-amp required, unlike this time yesterday.

Yesterday morning, I woke from a dream, having seen a man shredded by gatling gun fire. It happened in a dark barn. I really don't know what was going on, but one fellow cut his way out of some angled metal tube, while moving away from the end with the guy with the gun. There was some other gun, on the opposite side of the tube, which I think he manned, taking over from the previous operator. There might have been an exchange of fire, but he was certainly shot through the hole he had cut. Naturally, it was horrible. What's more, this setup appeared to be repeated down the length of the barn, tubes side by side. But this tube at this end was where the action was. It had an atmosphere like something out of Enemy At The Gates.

The first one I woke out of this morning was at the top of a tall old (say) New York building. I was with Steve McQueen, I think, and I don't think I was chilling with him, cos it wasn't like a residential balcony or anything; rather an adjunct to the roof. Perhaps we were on a case. Anyway, the building rocked sharply, tipping him over the edge. I was flung over an adjacent slated roof (same building), whose ridge I just caught hold of. I don't know how he fared. That was scary.

I might have hoped to wake out of something better, next time, but it didn't turn out that way. Now the setting was something more like Dallas. In the middle of a courtyard mall (or something), there was one of those pneumatic rides that launches people up the side of a tower. And then, in front of a tower, was a white hawk jet (or similar), not at the top, but out of speed like it was at the top. It turned, to swoop over the mall roof, but didn't seem to have the speed (and therefore the lift) to make it. I somewhat pointlessly went for cover. There was no big bang. And then, something was going on inside a community/school hall, possibly nearby. The area had an anodyne effect, being sunny, tidy and clean. Inside was nice too. An enormous airliner went overhead. I commented that perhaps this would be the actual disaster. There was much flame, and things exploded like in my FA18 Hornet flight simulator, being nowhere near the actual detonation. It could have been worse, I'd say. Anyway, it was nice to be there, wherever that was. I felt content.

Pa's movements next-door woke me such that I could remember the strangely sexual stuff I'd been dreaming about yesterday morning. It was nice to be able to remember it.

This morning, I and my long hair had been at the top of the biol block stairs, when Biggles and Bog(?) approached from below. Perhaps they had long hair too. In any case, I gabbled some greeting; it was quite awkward. Did I move to hug them? I dunno.

magnetic loop

00005d55 | 2005-05-19T15:46:00Z | radio > rx > antenna > type | -mt4-
The antenna is a magnetic loop, constructed from 4.5 metres of 500mm aluminium foil, folded once. It's hanging from the curtain rail in the next room, the rather heavy, high-value capacitor perched precariously in the middle. A 32cm diameter coupling loop sits in the cradle of the foil loop, forcing its larger sibling into a rather uncomfortable triangle. Being unlicensed, I tuned the unit by turning up the computer speakers and adjusting the capacitor plates by hand, moving them and taking my hand away many times to achieve a reasonable signal of background noise. But still the noise level is very low. If only some stations were around.

I heard a Scottish amateur station on the 40m band earlier, where an ordinary wire gave me mostly noise.

According to `magloop4', I ought to be able to tune down to 2.690 MHz, with this 2000pF capacitor. However, I could swear that I managed something lower than that earlier: 2.3?? MHz, with less than full capacitance.

Anyway, it should prove an interesting toy, as long as I don't receive too many more shocks from the PL-259, when I try to unscrew it to compare signals. :)

Oops - I forgot to mention that the pre-amp is inline.

I just heard a station 10 miles west of Chester talking with a station in Cardiff. They tried a QSY to 7051280 Hz. And then I heard G1WIA QRP in London, on 7089250 Hz.

Another dream featuring descending to the bottom floors of a large industrial building, possibly a hospital or my old workplace or a soviet hotel or something bizarre like that. The people I was with were strangers, and I wasn't completely comfortable in their company. And there was a bit where Brenda and Trevor were leaving me at their place to do some cleaning, while they went out with some oldies for the evening. One of them, at least, was strange to me, and an introduction was imposed.

~15 seconds of 4953 kHz, then the same of 5328, then 5343, then 6913. This demonstrates nicely the narrow bandwidth of a magloop which apparently has not been correctly wired until now. The thirty seconds of Shannon Volmet was nice and strong - S9.

This station was quite strong before I started the recording. When it became quiet, I blamed the sky, but he turned out to have a (turning) beam antenna. I was interested to hear G4ZCG; he was quite readable, four hundred watts and all. And then UR5VAP came through nicely.

The extra noisiness at about the 18 minute mark was me plugging my control unit into the power supply.

There was also a frequency change to 5328 kHz.

29D was talking with 44B (I think) just now, starting on 5343 kHz and moving to 5328 kHz. Conditions were variable, with 29D coming up to S6 at one point. 44B was nothing to get very excited about. Telly interference and the like devalued my recording.

I had another start of term dream. Ben Young was apparently Head of House, and I shared his study. I had arrived having travelled I think from Cardiff (I don't know how) with just my rucksack. The second floor study seemed unstable, and it rocked and slid and shook. But then it turned out to be just my imagination. Queues of boys waited outside the Memorial Hall for assembly. Ben's real-life study was occupied by someone playing soppy (and beautiful) film music on the flute. I said, "no soppy film music, please." Two very tall old geezers in tuxedos stood in his doorway. The 'flautist' emerged from the room with a miniature keyboard, on which he did his playing. A few of us stood at the window, I suppose. The place was dark and dismal, as usual. I think the Ben Young thing might have come from a memory of 'Mister' James-Pratt questioning his name at the beginning of his first lesson.

On the long wire, this time, with no small loop left standing and no replacement large loop. The wire leaves the back bedroom, goes over the shed and along the wall, to the corner of the garden, where it turns right and hugs the fence at two or three feet until the front of the property, when it turns right again and settles in the fir next to the path. It's about 48.80m long.
