i missed my opportunity to mention this to the people at jane and jan's place (a week ago this evening), so i'll type it now; on the previous saturday night, i had tuned in to wcr fm, as had been my practice for several weeks; what i found was a jazz programme, capably presented by a lancastrian; however, either he or someone else was less capable at putting records on; so, after the lancastrian had announced and started to play a tune, another track started on top of it; he excused the error and eventually said `and now to listen to what i wanted to play in the first place' or some such thing; but, before the music began to play, he uttered a bold but restrained `fuck'; it was sweet

interested by the idea of a half wavelength vertical antenna, i went into windows this morning, to use some reg edwards software; i began by using `endfeed', but then came across an online reference to `tunehalf' (which it turned out i had downloaded on a previous occasion) and began to play with it; my premise is a vertical radiator, variable to a half wavelength long at any hf frequency (1.8 to 30 mhz), up to a maximum length of 60m; now that i think about it, i used only 28 as the highest frequency; anyway, using a 15 to 250 pf capacitor, the program suggested that 2 microhenries would do the trick from 28 mhz down to 7 mhz, i think; 16 microhenries would then be required down to 2.445 mhz; a half wavelength at that frequency is 60m; from there down to 1.8 mhz, more than 60 microhenries would be required; the biggest question is how to control the length of the antenna, if not by hand; if the remote capacitor were controlled by a servo, then perhaps the antenna could be winched up and down until an swr match were achieved; this method might prove too inaccurate, dependent on the (unknown by me) magnitude of the drop in efficiency caused by a slight departure from a half wavelength; however, it's a nice qrp idea
