another good walk; good weather today; an interesting mix of nice, nasty and psychotic folk, on my walk along the canal; some walked dogs; some cycled; the last cyclist was a bit of a darling, actually; as four days ago, my body clock was very helpful; at 1155, it told me it was nearly time to stop saying `good morning'; (i said `snot feathers' after midday) (not really) and then there was a garden with at least 6 footballs in it; and some chatty women in a field; not far past the chatty women was one of those fields that i fall in love with; small; secluded, yet open; once i was back in the city (and on merridale road), an infant on a tricycle or something stopped and looked at me as if to say `what are you?'; i certainly didn't look like a city boy; a mint but sad babe drank coffee in beatties; she was probably a model; around the next corner, a gangly emo girl slunk along; i bought some cereal and sweet stuff, where the girl on the till was plainly pretty, then was delighted to find everything i needed for my chinese meal at a nearby supermarket; at that checkout, the short asian girl with greek frizzy hair was smiley and polite; and finally, on the finishing straight, i was able to assist a stubbly lad who got out of a passenger seat to ask for directions; `chapel ash' he said; `i know where that is' i thought; `compton road' he said; thanks to my walking about, i knew where that was too; wonderful 00005fe8 | 2008-01-06T21:54:04Z | -no-label- | -mt4- |

having added christmas 1989 audio to my blog yesterday, today i created some clips of hywel rees and nick hellier in the signals hut in late 1990; i believe the date i have suggested (1990-09-01) is earlier than the earliest possible date, but it's a fair enough indicator of the era 0000601b | 2008-01-09T12:42:27Z | -no-label- | -mt4- |

while giving ma the gist of what i had typed earlier, i recalled that `signals' ended up becoming a legitimate `activity', one or more of which a person would be expected to sign up for, at the beginning of a school year (or however often); i don't remember on which days it was officially supposed to take place; and i don't think it had many takers during my tenure; but i dare say i was there for each session :) 0000601c | 2008-01-09T14:34:40Z | -no-label- | -mt4- |

another walk yesterday, starting at about 1016; i had cooked oats, sweetened by apricots and maple syrup, which i carried in a small, resealable freezer bag; i also carried the usual gillian bar; the weather was warmer again, but i forgot to leave my jumper off; i compensated for this by leaving my head exposed to the wind and rain, which was a nice experience; especially when walking south across a very exposed field into what might have been a 40 mph gale; by then, i had seen a buzzard at close quarters and a flock of long-tailed tits; i entered oaken by a road which was closed for works; ahead of me, a car had emerged from a driveway and had stopped; the old driver wished me a good morning and offered me a lift to codsall; i explained that i was enjoying the walk; he turned out to be a jogger, who had been told that he must lose weight; he didn't look heavy to me; the rain persisted; i eventually found shelter enough to take a photograph of a church in codsall, but that was the only one i took, until i had crossed the motorway and reached the northmost point of my route, when the rain dissipated; i walked a little further than i needed to, at that top end of the course; as usual, i had taken no map with me, relying on a vague concept of a route in my head; i found the monarch's way and started south, always looking for a way east, to join the canal; i consumed half of my oats before the canal, then the rest, as i marched south; the gillian bar was long gone; the light was good on anything i passed, as i looked back; some of that goodness crept into my photography; this was the reverse of the route pa and i had taken, a few years back, when we walked to brewood and ma had picked us up in the car; by the time i reached autherley junction, not much light was reaching the canal; it was a gloomy home straight, lit only by the presence of a heron, which i nearly walked into, at first; i didn't manage to capture an image of him flying by, but i enjoyed the sight; a few trains passed overhead, as i took photographs; i emerged from the canal to a tremendous sunset 00006077 | 2008-01-11T17:17:18Z | -no-label- | -mt4- |

since sir simon rattle's choice of janacek's `the cunning little vixen' on `desert island discs' yesterday, i had occasion to use my long-standing nickname for it, which pa had not heard and really tickled him; `the vexing little cunt'; ma was less impressed; both were rather boozy 00006087 | 2008-01-14T09:37:36Z | -no-label- | -mt4- |
