brenda starts to hear about nancy's daughter's poetry booklet

nancy had given a copy to gramps at the club, after he had given me a good wooping on the table at the far end (table 4?); he had offered me the first frame if i could pot the tricky blue, pink and black; i took full advantage of that offer (fluking the black), but then could not stop missing and leaving gramps in; i lost the remaining frames; but the totty on the way home was good

we spent this evening at `the point, cardiff bay', listening to `the boo hooray theory'; the old timers in the band are old friends of mike, gramps' writing pal; the sound level was unnecessarily high throughout and the balance was poor; the backing singing totty came across well, but i wish they had taken a solo or two; the leading man was willing, but not very inspiring, and the balance did not favour him; the concert was well attended; i stood at the back, leaning against a pillar

a local chap called duncan had organised this concert by the `fab 40s'; they played glenn miller and stuff; the local oldies had been invited to dust off their old instruments and attend an afternoon practice session; while gramps was involved in that, i had a nap; and then those locals played a couple of numbers in the second half;

the concert as a whole was enjoyable; the trumpets were quite good and occasionally hot; the clarinet solo in `moonlight serenade' was shaky, but sweetly so; at its nadir, the soloist distinguished himself by playing a note or two almost a semitone flat;

the three of us had been reserved seats near the front; during the interval, nita joined gran and i from the back of the church, while gramps tested the keyboard

trevor accompanies the `fab 40s' and other local folk; kitty bevan on the furthest sax; i recognised her from somewhere; had she sometimes been the conductor on my train to university? ah; i suppose not; kitty replied by email just now that she hasn't tried conducting on a train as yet; so familiar though

we ventured to the garth; as for our walk the previous day, the sky was strange and hazy; surreal; i would have guessed it stormy, but it was eerily calm;

in the morning, i had made my usual trip to the park with my rugby ball; after a shower, i cooked for me and gramps; gran felt poorly in the guts; probably a side-effect of her drugs, she said;

she said;

(actually, gramps was responsible for the great majority of the `she said'-ing during my stay; on one occasion, it coincided with an instance of gramps giving too long a prelude to a story; gran told him that if he left out the `she said's, he'd get to the point a lot more quickly)

since gramps had not replaced the pineapple juice with a new one from the freezer, and since i only thought of it while i was already chopping the garlic, i sent him to spar for a cheap replacement; he was most speedy;

gramps declared that it had been the best rendition of my recipe; i agreed; i think i had used more soy sauce than usual; there was enough left-over rice and smeg for us both to eat handsomely the next day, when gramps said it was just as tasty

it was at about this time that i woke and remained awake; i had dreamed of seeing lightning striking the eiffel tower and other tall buildings; it was like one of those recent `climate change' movies;

i contemplated going for a walk, and i gave more thought to that idea every so often, as i tried to get more sleep;

the dawn chorus started after i had been awake for a while

in the early afternoon, i played snooker with gramps and fred; first, i played gramps; then, despite having lost, i played fred; and then i let them have a go; and then it was time for fred to leave;

i won the next frame with a doubled pink, up and down the table, and then lost the equally close final frame; good stuff;

somewhat after the middle of `springwatch' on beeb 2, mike arrived; at the end of the show, we three blokes wandered to the butchers, where i was soon introduced to phil, the final member of gramps' writing triangle;

we spent the evening discussing hancock and a few old time comedians i hadn't heard of; mike and i indulged in some more linguistics, and he demonstrated his false vocal chords, which he had once made to sing a 12th beneath his already-deep voice;

having quizzed gramps about his hair hygiene regimen, phil would later describe a squirrel eating a jam sandwich, a sight from one of his frequent walks around heath park that he did not have a camera to capture;

gramps got excited about something; perhaps it was his tommy cooper story, from his days as a deputy head teacher; whatever it was, he said `it was the most perfect...'; he had already corrected a couple of instances of people `qualifying an absolute' during my stay, so he would have been disappointed to have himself transgressed;

a good evening, though a late one, with an early start to come; but i had not flagged until home; the rich, clear sky had a hint of royal blue, with a greenish point in the north
