having travelled to town on the bus (featuring a cut-glass brunette with long curls and white jacket), we 3 arrived first at clwb ifor bach; i got the drinks in, thanks to some gothic totty behind the bar; ma and pa arrived just as i was paying, and we slid across the room to chat;

i had mistakenly left my camera in wolverhampton, but i didn't miss it

millennium stadium, cardiff

00007d08 | 2008-11-08T13:45:00Z | location | -mt4-
we had decided to get to the millennium stadium about 45 minutes before kick-off; we 3 were near the pitch; ma and pa didn't expect to enjoy their seats high on the other side, but i knew they must be better than ours, having the 3rd dimension in their favour;

it was the first time i had been there with the roof on; there was not much atmosphere; just the old farts on the pitch, singing the old songs, accompanied by the regimental band; and some hefty south africans kicking the ball across the pitch at each other; lots of high kicks and drop goals; and silence; it was quite surreal; or perhaps the atmosphere was the same as for my previous experiences, and the change was all in me;

the singers and the `support our wounded' bucket carriers eventually took the empty seats to our right; there was a huge cheer when wales came out to warm up, and again when they returned to play;

i enjoyed `my hen wlad fy nhadau' more than i thought i would; perhaps that was my favourite part; the match had some attrition, but wasn't as attractive as we would have liked; the old farts from the choir kept shouting at people to ``sit down, for god's sake!''; and, upon noticing the gravity of a south african infringement on the video replay, one of them powerfully yelled `look at that! come on ref! get a grip!'; just like my stradey park movies;

perhaps i would have been more interactive if i were colder; but i wore my merino wool and a good coat throughout, and was happy to be quietly cosy; but i joined in well enough when something exciting happened

we 3 were first again to las iguanas, where pa had unexpectedly been able to book a table for the 7 of us; ma and pa were not far behind; and eventually jess and mervyn arrived; we all found something to enjoy from the set menu, and the waitress was a darling; slender and tanned, all in black, energetic and sweet; a bit like katie holmes, but more of a blade, and nicer; we liked her;

when asked by pa what her starter was like, jessica expertly rendered the colonel's line from fawlty towers; `rather good, surprisingly'; one doesn't hear that line very often, and i laughed loudly; funnily enough, her starter was duck;

still wearing some merino wool, it would have been enough that i became very hot as the evening went on (as did pa, in his red woollen not-rugby shirt), but gran's soup and possibly my gillian bar at the stadium had made me very windy; i stepped outside for some relief; not wishing to stand with the smokers, i pulled my hood on and walked through the rain to stand under a large parasol; there i stood, farting broadly from time to time; after about 10 minutes, i felt comfortable enough to return to the table

we reached home, stripped off and watched `have i got a bit more news for you', on which reginald d hunter was good value;

i got to bed with about 10 minutes to go until gran's birthday; on radio 5, they were building up to joe calzaghe's fight at madison square garden;

improbably, i unintentionally woke for the fight, which became quite a treat; after the minor disappointment of the rugby result, the sound of 10000 people singing `wales, wales' in new york was quite uplifting, despite my semi-conscious state

as gran and gramps ate oats at the breakfast table, i spotted a cat disappearing over the back fence with a blackbird it had snatched from a town meeting; there had been 6 or so blackbirds hopping around on what remained of the lawn; i remembered scarlett standing on the coffee table on 2006-05-31;

after a slow sunday at home, during which we watched rugby (and rugby league) highlights and i showed gran and gramps my most recent blog entries, ma and pa collected me; ma would not let pa drive at any stage on the way home, due to the alcohol in his blood; buffeted by monmouthshire gales and deluged in worcestershire, ma did well to get us home in one piece

my bedroom, wolverhampton

00007d0a | 2008-11-09T19:30:00Z | location | -mt4-
my sleep this morning was much interrupted, allowing for much dream recall; i forget the early bits, though i think that the sexual encounter i do remember was not the first;

we (i remember pa most clearly, though i suppose ma and others were present) sat at a table past the end of a detached hotel; the end of a meal, perhaps; it felt like spain, though i've not been there; about 20 metres away, up some steps, with the hotel to the right, a waitress directed me to take a jug of milk or cream to a room; i carried the small jug in a small bowl; i think they were the same as the old set in the cupboard in the kitchen;

a 1-man lift was my means of reaching the room; it was inside the building, made of clear plastic; strangely, its sides curved inward to the level of my knees, such that i was rather slotted into the enclosure;

once at the correct floor, i snogged some girl who was turning the rooms over; that was fun;

and then i was walking around a farm; back in england, i think; i was being given a tour of the place, along with a lot of other people; we walked through the yard, between the house and a wall, before emerging through a gap in the wall and proceeding along the other side; as we did this, an oriental american made some suggestion about the british attitude to something; i asked him to repeat himself or be more specific; as he reiterated, he fumbled his words, as if losing his conviction, and we (and perhaps others) laughed together as i made fun of his lack of certainty; i think i called him a jazz man or something; strange

i might have mentioned detuning my skywire matching network on 60m to reduce the router noise; i found a similar effect on 17m today; but there was a nice surprise on 15m, where the tuned state was also the quietest; i suppose the loop feedpoint has a high impedance or something at that frequency

i remember two train bits in my dream this morning, with a toilet break in-between;

we (whoever) worked our way forward through a wooden train, eventually reaching a very spacious dining car (far wider than a real one); it was quite bare, with white linen on the tables; a few people were already there, in victorian (or whatever) dress; a little light conversation; everything airy and pleasant;

perhaps the main body of the car was fairly realistic, but the back-right corner stuck out, giving the room an l shape; i entered it, finding that i could see up the remainder of the train, which was at that moment on a straight course on a wide path; perhaps there were numerous tracks; i don't remember whether there was a track beneath the protruding dining area;

and then i entered a toilet to the right of some steps, opposite the entrance to a modern vestibule; opposite the door was a bank of urinals, with letterbox windows above; i walked past them, behind some other guy; the next room was smaller, again with urinals opposite the door;

the next thing i remember is a train carriage with the same layout; this latest room was now a compartment, perhaps with a corridor beyond it; scott quinnell sat there; the previous room had seats like a compartment, but was long like a corridor; a boy who would have been his son sat there with his mother, around the corner from his dad;

perhaps i was just passing through; i heard something the lad said; it was a sweet and sincere deference to someone else's sensibilities, and i had to comment on it; it reminded me of myself;

i think it was then that i conversed with scott about the succession of large men who had played for the wales rugby team (this was along the same lines as the `fan scene' team for the wales v canada match yesterday, who mentioned the quinnells and derwyn jones); scott contradicted my suggestion that his brother craig broke the mould, but we were on the same wavelength

isn't dozing marvellous? this morning, i snapped out of a dream in which i had walked to the end of the cottage vegetable garden in the snow, which was already trodden; perhaps pa had come this way to switch the water off or something; once there, i packed a snowball; a man dressed like a farmer walked left to right along the lletyrhyddod road; a small girl walked about 15 metres behind him; i thought the man might be aneurin, but it wasn't; i greeted him (though in the real world i suppose he would be too distant for that), and then i woke;

i soon drifted off again, where for a few moments i was in a gloomy, spacious room with a handful of students in bikinis; the centre of my attention was a blonde in pink; there were pillars or arches or whatever; perhaps tiles; one exit with daylight ahead; perhaps another to the right, and i think that's the direction in which the party was headed; the place was like a turkish bath, i suppose

today i dreamed of a fox and cub living in a dry, earthy cavity at the top of a seaside cliff; the aperture was small, facing the sea, with just a very narrow path before it, leading left and up to the grass and woodland beyond; and then a man was in there with them, on the right hand side; he could do little more than lie there; it was like some nature documentary

we had come to brum for a bit of a mooch around the frankfurt christmas market; we might have seen a movie at the new street odeon, but i hadn't fancied anything from the online movie list;

the stalls beyond the town hall were still unoccupied; but a complete market would not have done much for the atmosphere; i suppose it needs to be dark, and there should be kids around, and not so many unsavoury characters; the vibe was not good;

mum had bought some snoggable garlic, but it was too late for me; i had already dined on the smelly kind

00007def | 2008-11-19T14:22:00Z | -no-label- | -mt4-

one of mum's usual movies that should be stills; i like the way my face falls when i realise that mum still has some faffing to do before taking the picture; and at the end my eyebrows rise to some approaching person; another such movie followed

i had suggested the joint stock for `a bit of a sit doon' (à la `sid the sexist'); ma had a couple of sauvignons (or something else beginning with `s') and i a couple of cranberry juices; we sat in one of those marvellous tall windows and looked at the world go by; we talked about meditation and dreaming and stuff;

ma got worked up about the way a traffic warden was dealing with a woman who had just parked her car in the disabled space outside; mum might have walked out and lopped his head off; but i think he had just been giving the woman directions; we laughed;

while there was still just a little light in the sky, we left to catch a train home

on this morning (i'm writing this a day late), i had been dreaming again; i remember two parts;

some sort of building at a railway station; joe gerrard; some others from school, i think; waiting for a train east; or north-east; that's what it felt like; the line was something like llangadog and rhiwbina, but more open, with much light from the right, as i looked up the line in the direction we were hoping to travel; the track and the tall trees to its left were well lit; and that's all i remember now;

and then i was on top of one spur of a shapely hotel; the adjacent block rose higher; people eating at tables; and then for some reason i was untying a tarpaulin in a strong wind; i felt that it might drag me off the roof; eventually i released the last tie, and the tarpaulin blew onto some houses a short way away;

i had gone to fetch the tarpaulin, i suppose, and found myself in the house it had landed on; the inhabitants were a male couple, ageing and ugly; there were small dogs too; a good one to wake from, then; i don't know whether i did, but i don't remember anything after that

just scanned in an old photograph and removed its dust and scratches in the gimp; about halfway through, it seemed to be taking even longer than usual; and then i realised that i had neglected to wipe the photograph before scanning; i had thought to do it, but then thought to wipe the scanner first; and then i forgot

00007e25 | 2008-11-25T17:18:09Z | -no-label- | -mt4-
having cited many `beginning of term' dreams, today i dreamed of leaving school (now that i think of it, i have had such dreams before, and probably mentioned them); it was quite vivid, and strange;

i must have forgotten many things by now; however, i remember it was sunny; i said goodbye to tony hellier at the senior common room exit; but it was a new exit, opposite the old one, and we were outside, with a view right through the ground floor to the main entrance;

on the drive by the chemistry block, just before the two roads become one, i got into dad's scimitar; but not the one he had at the time; the topless one; and not into the passenger seat; i was the driver; going home to wolverhampton, i suppose; i had two passengers; sean rose (i think he lived in presteigne) and one other; simon cozens?

both these characters made my skin crawl, and i would like to have forgotten them completely; however, reasons for dreaming of them might include having seen simon cozens on facebook in recent days and noticed a trailer for a show about the jacksons coming to live in this country; the way sean rose creeped me out was very similar to the way michael jackson does;

my passengers became unimportant as i approached a mountain on the road home; i feel that i had been there in recent dreams; the precarious road and insanely precipitous railway were familiar; the mountain was plain rock, light brown and crumbling, like something out of `9th company'

upper green was welcoming today; i arrived between 1300 and 1400; the air was clear and the ground was dry; the place seemed to glow; a steady breeze blew gloomy clouds from the south-west, but the clouds were high, and that horizon was gleaming;

the rain arrived as forecast at 1500; the world looks pretty miserable now; but i like it

by the way, i spent most of yesterday installing fedora 10;

the latest legacy nvidia driver hasn't migrated to the version of x pursued by fedora, so that doesn't work; pulseaudio didn't work, so i disabled it and now alsa lives again; s3_bios acpi sleep doesn't work, so i've had my first go at hibernating, which offers a certain economy over the normal startup/shutdown cycle; i chose gnome over kde for the first time, after my earlier (fedora 9) horror at the unconfigurable kde 4 plasma widget that kept leaping out at me whenever i closed a window with the mouse; i didn't trust the kde bundled with fedora 10 to be any more reasonable;

there's some clunkiness here in gnome, but i've discovered some funky stuff, and i think i might be happy here

i forgot to mention yesterday that i had watched `the man without a past' (2002) the night before; it had some laugh-out-loud moments, and a few charming lines; `what do i owe you?' `if you find me face-down in the gutter, turn me over'

thanks to a handy tip at `http://www.dynamicdrive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11480', i have stopped using the `background image' method of superimposing my movie icon over blog movie preview images; i was prompted to search for this alternative solution when i set firefox to use my system colours, overriding the original colours of a document; the preview image, being a background image, was being overridden

i was about to do my nut earlier; fedora 10; trying to write a dvd-rw; that problem i used to get in fedora 7 with something polling the drive all the time; perhaps i dodged it before, by doing it on the command line instead of k3b and perhaps by disabling hal too; however, that command line method did not work today when i had stopped the hal daemon (it said ``where's hal?''), so i searched the net a bit; eventually, fiddling around at the command prompt, i found a tool called `hal-disable-polling'; that did the trick, in the nick of time;

just the camera to go now (i hope)

today's wales-australia game was super; wales offloaded like they did in grand slam 2005, and ran lines, and cleared out, and fought; lee byrne man of the match

two movies this evening, under a duvet on the sofa; ``no man's land'' (2001) and `half nelson' (2006); i had tried to make `the sniper' (1952) my second film, but the film 4 stream is still a bit flaky after its summer absence, and the recording was pretty broken up; anyway, the two movies i watched were great; and i've freed up 3 tapes in the process

i did make a move to kde 4.1 today, but it was nullified by the lack of a working khotkeys; so i'm back with the clunky gnome option

my bedroom, wolverhampton

00007e3b | 2008-12-03T16:00:00Z | location | -mt4-
it was cold in this world today; and a bit slippy underfoot; nice though; in sainsbury's, a dizzy woman asked me to reach down for her a bottle of treated milk with a blue top; and then a couple on tettenhall road asked me whether that was the way to the connaught hotel; `about 5 minutes' i said `on the left'; i saw jan for the first time in ages as i put the bins out; `too cold to talk' he said; i think he needed a wee; and then i laid the fire;

that was all after i'd noticed an apple tree full of birds (outside my bedroom window) scattering and screaming; i saw a few fancy moves from the female sparrowhawk responsible for the disturbance, before she alighted in a bush; i think her talons were empty;

and this morning on upper green was beautiful; a perfect sky and a little nibble of a breeze;

by the way, the blackbirds have been hanging around that tree a lot lately, eating the fallen fruits

whatever happened to those can openers that cut into the side of the can? i did a little looking for one today, in sainsbury's and wilkinson; no joy; i remember using one in this house back in 1994 or thereabouts; it worked really well; no getting stuck like the other kind does

00007e3c | 2008-12-03T18:40:57Z | -no-label- | -mt4-
another gnome thing; between firefox and metacity, i am unable to open a new firefox window (with other firefox windows already open) using hot keys and get it to keep the focus; this is rather inconvenient, after the (frequent) inconvenience of having to press the hot keys more than once to get the thing to go; in kde 3 / fedora 7, i might have noticed a new firefox window coming up in the background when there was already an unminimised window (firefox or otherwise), but not when all windows were minimised;

this lack of focus is also evident when i press control+alt+delete; the shutdown dialog always comes up in the foreground, but usually without the focus; i cannot cycle to it using alt+tab; the only way i can reach it is with the mouse; horrible;

i have read that metacity has some `focus stealing prevention' going on; whatever is responsible, i wish i could make it go off

00007e3d | 2008-12-04T15:46:38Z | -no-label- | -mt4-
no sooner had i typed that last segment than i opened a focused new firefox window with hot keys; xmms had the focus at the time; closed new firefox window; closed xmms; new new firefox window unfocused

nothing much; had a qso last night with a northern ireland station on 80m; listening around a bit; no entries in my hf log since the 3rd of september; glad to be back on the air again; things have quietened down at work; busy time of year at work, but not for me in particular; conditions getting stronger; first time we've had a decent qso at this time of day for 2 years

beautiful wx here today; although it's cold, it's very clear blue skies; no wind; might wander around with my camera later; playing in a brass band concert last thursday; that was fun; i've switched off the router, because it gives me 3 s points of noise

i rose early on sunday; even earlier than ma and pa, who were taking a train that morning; i had woken about an hour before, hot and bothered; i wandered around, helping pa with his computer and making tea, i suppose; i felt pretty rotten, but i put that down to lack of sleep;

but later i became cold and felt worse; the chilly air tumbling off every window in the house didn't help, so all the curtains were closed at about 14:00;

i occupied myself with `the phantom menace' before bed (i must have been ill); i threw up a little and then suffered a restless night with the trots; laundry in the morning; the south park movie in the afternoon, which really did me some good; i was crying with laughter;

there would have been more laundry this morning, but last night i remembered the drill; bog roll in the pants; well, not the roll exactly; but paper from it; ended up slinging the pants out of the back door; but no spoiled bed linen;

it's a good read, this, isn't it?

anyway, when i got downstairs, i discovered that the pants had been retrieved from their ignominious position near the outside bin; ma must have washed them for me; `that was quick' i thought; but no; she had thought i must have dropped them after doing my laundry, and had put them on the radiator to dry! that's right, mum; share the stink!

i did a little eating yesterday, which didn't hurt; i'm not back to solids yet, but i feel somewhat better;

the strangest symptom was that all my loose shit smelled of salmon; i'm accustomed to that smell after eating salmon, but not otherwise;

in other news, my fedora 10 won't hibernate now; it wakes as soon as it goes to sleep

addendum: this night, i had another christ college end-of-term dream; hugging two friends in the alway house senior common room; adam ormrod in the left arm and (i think) des lally in the right; and then i was about 5 rows behind prodip, fairly central, at end-of-term assembly; he was heckling the teachers; for my benefit, i think; and i was cringing with everyone else; but he was cool

`hymns and arias' sung by an alcoholic crowd at wales international rugby matches; a song about singing old songs at a match against england at twickenham; why not just sing the old songs? something to inspire and encourage the team? all you seem to be doing is putting yourselves in the mood for the next round of drinks

another restless night, after an attempted vegetable biriyani from a packet, and some cod from the local chippy; that's what hunger does to you, kids; perhaps there was something bad in the batter; or perhaps i just wasn't ready for hardcore scran; it had been a long time since i'd used a chippy; the cod cost £3.30; it could have bought me for less;

ma has texted me to say that doctor jo recommends rice for my current illness; anyway, despite my nocturnal discomfort, i learned a few things from bbc radio 5; like this year will be 1 second longer; a correction to account for a slowing of the earth's rotation;

i dreamed of walking charlotte felman to cardiff high school this morning; it didn't look much like it, but i think that's what it was supposed to be; the left edge of the front of the building was more prominent than the right; a covered entrance, under which were parked construction vehicles; and a crane overhead; we approached the frontage from the right; charlotte looked as she did the last time i saw her (at gran and gramps' place), though in something like school uniform; i think that's all i remember; very vivid; quite nice

still poorly here; ma has the idea that she might have been keeping her tummy bug warm for me since returning from turkey in october, and that she gave it to me on the weekend; i don't know; she's coming home this lunchtime, stopping at the supermarket on the way; i've asked her for some sugar; sweets; fruit juice; that kind of thing; something to improve my spirits and make me feel a little stronger; i'm wondering what to have to eat when (if) i recover; top of the list at the mo are lentil shepherd's pie and the tofu garlic and ginger dish from the local chinese

a full week after watching star wars episode 1 while shivering on the sofa, i found myself on the same spot, watching episode 2, dehydrated with my gut all cramped up; i got some movement (and therefore relief) by massaging my gut; too bad i'd turned down mum's offer of peppermint oil when she set off for saturday's concert; i managed to pass some loose shit before bed, as well as throwing up the morning's pineapple and plums, before going to sleep with my painful gut;

my appetite has been returning slowly; nothing heard from my arse since that night; i've no energy, but i feel okay;

the peppermint oil idea had been given to ma by uncle billy, who had heard that it was good for irritable bowel syndrome;

caught humph's final ``i'm sorry i haven't a clue'' last night on bbc 4; it struck me for the first time how similar jeremy hardy's behaviour is to that of mark watson

i'm shitting very sanely now; better than i have in ages; after my illness, i'm left to wonder why;

i have thought of 4 things that might have chilled my gut; the first is the peppermint oil, taken after lunch and dinner; the second is the lack of food the gut had to cope with while i was ill; the third is a more specific version of the second scenario; perhaps a damaged area of gut was able to heal in the absence of food; the fourth scenario is perhaps the least likely; that i flushed something out of me with all that weird salmon shitting;

anyway, i hope i can keep it up
