off to stay with gran and gramps; i had thought about travelling when i saw saturday looking good at the end of the five day weather forecast; when sunday came up looking equally good, i booked the tickets;

mum had dropped me by littlewoods, having picked up pa's shoes from a cobbler in penn; i bought an alarm clock for 2.19 at argos, then a pencil, sharpener and purple plastic-coated pad of paper at `home & office', made at the remarkable factory in worcester, where they make stuff from recycled materials; i needed something to use as a radio log book, but i ended up writing a lot more besides

on the cardiff train (well, maesteg); on the train from wolverhampton, a couple boarded at shifnal with a little girl; holly or something; about five years old; a real darling, with an old-fashioned face; rounded features; wide blue eyes; not loud, but chatty; she was a bit like that girl who went around the newhampton inn kissing everyone that day long ago, but more normal; on my side of the carriage, two asian schoolgirls got on at telford, the darker one with shiny eyes; shrewsbury high school, i shouldn't wonder; they certainly sounded right

pa had kept me up to date with the edf cup final between gloucester and cardiff blues by sms; having given me the final score (12 - 50); he asked me to guess the man of the match; i easily and correctly guessed martyn williams; i later watched the whole match on vhs with gran and gramps; it was super, especially that first halfpenny try; and now halfpenny will tour south africa with the british and irish lions

i'm not sure when we arrived; we had been forced to find a new space for the car, due to the demand on the normal spot; after commenting on the astonishing numbers of dandelion flowers about (we kept commenting all week), we had followed some half-naked girls and a dog up the path (the best of them was the one with the most clothes; a redhead); gramps had stopped for a rest a few times; skylarks about;

the line came off the reel pretty smoothly; an adorable lamb took some interest in the far end, while i was fetching the kite; gran and i launched the kite first time in a gentle wind (gran gave me a celebratory hug), while gramps guarded the other end of the line; during our time there, the kite crashed a few times, and flew high a few times; and all the while the back of my neck reddened in the sun; having been downed, the kite launched itself a couple of times;

the tump to the east was occupied for some time by a small family; it must have been a great place to be lazy

at about this time, 60m died; first raf volmet, then shannon volmet; soon thereafter, i noticed some activity on the swr meter; i had not thought that i might get any reading since adding the extra power cells; i got a 1:1 match on 40m, using a 14.5m vertical, i think; i had tried a half wavelength and a quarter wavelength on 60m; hence the 14.5m; not many strong stations on any band

we had reached caerphilly road, on the way to caerphilly mountain; since i had just suggested craig-yr-allt as an option, we turned around, returned to rhiwbina for a newspaper (which i collected from spar) and headed for craig-yr-allt; i had gone along with the caerphilly idea so that we would not wear out gramps, but wanted to be delivered to craig-yr-allt afterwards;

gran and gramps said that they would walk along the base of the mountain, while i played with my kite at the top; i set off at about 1400 local time, having agreed to be back at 1630;

i had left my alarm clock in the dining room (too noisy at night); used the mobile phone clock instead

one of the main reasons for my outdoor expeditions has been my desire to hear quiet radio conditions again; however, today taught me that i would need some closed headphones to do that; the poor quality of the ic-706 speaker and the noise from wind and road traffic are as disruptive as anything at home

another thing i noticed today was that an antenna approaching the desired length (i forget whether a quarter or half a wavelength) would increase the reception in the radio, despite being disconnected from it; i've noticed couplings before, but i wasn't expecting one in this scenario

i've often said that ma should be invited to the `fan scene' studio for rugby matches on the bbc, so that she can share her continual criticism of the `ping-pong' kicking with a wider audience; yesterday, i thought of another role for her; while i was in the kitchen, she was in the next room, watching an mp twisting another mp's words in the house of commons; she gave her opinion thus; `oh, fuck off!'; lol; so i think she should be the voice-over lady for that channel

since i seem more likely to acquire a subnotebook than a dedicated recorder, here is a dump of notes i made about the marantz pmd620 and the olympus ls-10;

marantz pmd620;
pros; track marking; config presets;
cons; noisy buttons; frequency response 20-20000hz;
mono

marantz recommends lexar and sandisk cards, though sandisk compatibility with other devices seems dubious; 8gb for 15 hours mono;

olympus ls-10;
pros; longer battery life; fast usb; good mic gain knob; frequency response 20-44000hz;
cons; low frequency rolloff on mic?
2 gigs built in; no mono;

kingston 16gb class 4, i think, for 15 hours 48khz/24bit
